Gantumoote (2019) a story about teenage romance life and gender equality

a film who written and directed by Roopa Rao

  • Synopsis:

This movie is about a girl who named Meera that like to watch movie in her life. She lived in village that a bit far from the city.  Both of her parent are worker so she often spent her time alone. When she alone, she spent her time to go to cinema to watch some movie. One day her parent decided to move to the city. She go to a new school, meet a new friend, and found her first love. She also learn how life is, a love, and what feeling loss is like.

  • Trailer:

One of the biggest issues that brought up in this movie is patriarchy, and this is the most issue that drawn my attention. This system has been debated for a long time, especially from feminist perspective. In this movie you can see an example of patriarchy when one of Meera's friend got confessed by one of the male classmate and she refuse it. It makes the man angry and sad at the same time, he start to hurt herself to draw Meera's friend attention. Meera think it because he was influenced by the movie that recently released that mention "I love you and you must love me" this is implied of patriarchy ideology that still exist in our life, especially in India. In Indonesia, patriarchy is still exist. especially in a place which still use an old culture, where man has higher position from woman. These system is similar from India because in the past, our culture is mostly comes from India.

After many things that happened into Meera's life, she found her first love after she watch a movie that played by Salman Khan. She started to become one of his fans. When she at ninth grade, she found one of the boys in the classroom is similar to Salman Khan, and his name is Madhu. they made an eye contact and their love grow stronger after that. Madhu was average boy who love playing and have fun with his friend. His grade was average while Meera's has good grade at the school. At this part, especially after they graduate from junior high school, Madhu was depressed because he can't go at the same school with Meera again. He feels like he is not enough for her, so he push himself harder, but in the end he still can't catch up with Meera. He got more depressed especially when Meera is going to college. He was really desperate and decided to suicide.

In reality, this also often happen to people. The story was a bit extremes, but it really happened in our society because the toxic masculinity that man have to looks cool and can be rely on them. This is not Meera's nor Madhu's fault but this is Society's fault, because if we doesn't follow the society's rule they will judge on us. So the main thing is we have to change our mind.

Meera's daily life, isn't really far from reality, especially in Asian culture. For example, we can't fall in love if we haven't finish our school, and if our parent's found us fall in love with someone, they will scold us and tell us to focus on finish our school. We also find out that sexual harassments at the beginning of the movie when Meera was still a child, this often happen in real life, this happen can be happen because some of us are still use patriarchy ideology and treat woman as an object. That is really bad and needs to be punished, we also need to educate our society to respect woman because they are also have their own responsibility, and don't judge them easily because they are woman. We can also see some school bullying scene in the movie that happened to Meera. This also often happen in our society, not only woman, a man also sometimes got bullied because the toxic masculinity that are still adopted by most of society.

We can see that Meera's act is mostly affected by the movie she watch. Because from movie, we can know a lot of things that we didn't know such love, friendship, and culture from other country. We can also see other people perspective from the movie, like how rich people see their life and so on. Especially when we meet a cool characters, most of us will try to act like them. Some movie also can change the way we see the world, and sometimes it can change our mindset too. Movie has really big impact for our life, so we have to carefully choose what kind of movie we want to watch, or carefully filter what the message that movie try to deliver to us.

Thanks for reading my opinions about the film, see you next time.
