Using Story as Educational Instrument
Story is a narrative that human usually use to
tells their experience or a fiction to others. It is impossible to live without
a story. Nowadays, stories are very popular in our society. such a film, novel,
drama, etc. are one of the forms of a story. Stories also can in education
sector, by providing enough reading comprehension, students can improve their
knowledge about culture that presented in the stories. According to Book the
Art of creative Thinking (Adair, 2007) Reading books might
therefore help to stimulate and strengthen your creative thinking abilities. Other way stories also can
make the students more active by retelling the stories to other students. Digital
storytelling piques the interest of kids with a variety of learning styles, and
it may also foster cooperative collaboration and boost students' sense of
accomplishment (Reyes Torres, A. et al, 2012).
In education Story can be used
as pedagogical tools for teacher, especially English language teacher, help
their students to improve their ability in using English Language. Teacher can
distinguish the student ability in reading comprehension by seeing their
student telling a story. Hall (2005) said that In his own
words, the study – which was a replication of an earlier L1 research – revealed
a clear distinction between basic literal comprehension and ‘point-driven'
understanding, or ‘higher-order reading comprehension capabilities' in less
experienced and less successful readers. Stories are inseparable from culture,
and culture also inseparable from language. As a result, culture is an
important consideration in L2 teaching and learning (Picken, 2007).
In
conclusion, stories are playing important role in our life. It can be used for
many purposes. In education, stories are used for pedagogical purpose or as
education instrument. Reading a story can help strengthening students creative
thinking abilities. Story can be used in education in many ways depends on
teacher creativity. By using story, teacher also can see their student ability
by observing their students works or project. Reading story also can help
student to improve their knowledge about culture that included in the story.
