Using Movie as Teaching Materials for Story

Teaching EFL students are pretty challenging because as a foreign learner the differences in accent, background, and culture can make the teaching and learning progress a bit difficult. Teaching EFL with the old ways of teaching is not very efficient, especially with the learners. Teachers are trying to develop a new teaching material using Movie as the primary source to increase the student motivation in learning EFL. Even though these teaching materials are still not proven to be fully successful, evaluations will be conducted to improve this teaching material. Although using movie as teaching materials is still in doubt and questionable, movie can be the alternative solution in improving student’s learning experience in EFL.

Content must be presented in such a way that the student is actively engaged in the learning process by relating new data to previous experiences, strengthening the connection with this new knowledge and stressing its organization in a learning process to ensure the highest level of effectiveness in education (Maley & Kiss, 2017). Movie is an advancement of a story that teacher can use it as teaching materials to help students motivated in learning process. In a journal written by Ismaili (2013) “Practice has shown that reading an entire book can be tiresome and boring while an audio-visual experience can be more entertaining and engaging to students.” Reading a bunch of word without any visualization is tiresome because students required to imagine every scene that happen in the story, and movie help visualizing the story into something that our eyesight and hearing sense can receive.

Teacher can give student an activity such as watching a movie, and giving some question regarding the movie they watch. Student will observe many aspects on the movie such as the character, plot, and setting with the guideline from question given by the teacher. “Observation implies attempting to see a person, object or scene as if you had never seen it before in your life. What really teaches us, it has been said, is not experience, but observation” (Adair, 2007). After understanding the aspect in the movie, another activity such as, re-telling the story, creating a short story will be the new goal after student gain the knowledge of a story. Student will also be presenting their products into audience in classroom to test how much they understand their product and the story itself. Listening to a narrative is an interactive experience between listener and teller, and reading a short story is an interactive experience between reader and story writer The crucial aspect of great story-telling is that the audience ‘gets the point.' (Hall, 2005).

In conclusion, movie is an alternative and innovative way to use a story as a teaching material for teacher to use it to deliver the knowledge. While movie is entertaining, movie also can be used in many ways to help students in learning English. Movie also help delivering materials more effective because it is already visualized that make it more eye catching and more enjoyable. Some activities such as giving students a question regarding the movie they watch can help them to observe the movie more depth. After learn to observe the movie, students will re-tell the story and make a short story to applicating what they learn, and then presenting it in front of the class. After doing the activity, student will expected to improve their English skills especially in story as EFL students.
